Skábmagovat is the world’s northernmost Indigenous film festival, 320 km north of the Arctic Circle, in the community of Inari in the Finnish part of Sápmi. For the past 26 years it has been the main forum for Sámi cinema and an annual meeting place for the indigenous peoples.
The trademark of the festival, the unique Snow Theatre, offers unforgettable movie experiences under the Arctic sky. It strongly connects us to Nature, and literally makes Skábmagovat the coolest festival in the world – at best 30 degrees C below zero!
The festival reflects the progress of the Indigenous peoples’ own film production that began in the 1980s. Its development has been particularly rapid in the 21st century, when digital technology, film education and the nation’s own film festivals have increased the quantity and quality of films. Every year, new languages and peoples join the film family.
The film has functioned as a medium for Indigenous storytelling and visions, but also as a strong tool for strengthening their language and identity.
Numerous awards from international festivals show that the stories and the Indigenous way of telling them are also universal.
Kortfilmfestivalen is happy and grateful to welcome Skábmagovat Film Festival to Grimstad and into our festival family, with this selection of shorts curated especially for us.
