The Golden Chair Winners 2023

THE GOLDEN CHAIR AWARD –  BEST NORWEGIAN SHORT FILM:

This film constantly surprised us with its portrayal of a very particular modern relationship between two strikingly well-rendered characters, depicted with warmth, authenticity and  humor.  We were happy to see subjects like BDSM or cam work presented on screen with such a deft human touch, and were absolutely delighted by the film’s surprising twists and the film’s charming, multi-faceted protagonist. It’s rare to see a character travel through the whore/Madonna complex, and end up as some sort of BDSM Jesus.

The Golden Chair Award for Best Norwegian Short Film goes to Complications, directed by Ivar Aase.

THE TERJE VIGEN AWARD:

This film had the opportunity to be judgmental at any point, but the filmmaker chose not to take that path. Instead, they present us with a film that explores the dynamics of relationships, showcasing unconditional love in situations where you wouldn’t believe the camera was rolling. The filmmaker has the ability to reflect on the past and brings us to a point where we witness a work that is deeply humanistic. The jury was profoundly moved by the unique footage and the filmmaker’s skill in shaping this film into something truly special.

The Terje Vigen Award goes to Higher Than the Sky, directed by Ronja Krokstrand Gravklev

THE GOLDEN CHAIR AWARD – BEST INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM:

The jury was particularly impressed with this visually striking and emotionally resonant film that spoke to us all on a core level. We found it fiercely and visually truthful in its storytelling, with layered characters and complex dynamics that find unconventional avenues to shed a light on the challenges of breaking patriarchal structures. Its skillful direction finds access to raw inner truths that invite us to confront our own perceptions.

On this merit, the Golden Chair is awarded to Nocturnal Burger by Reema Maya.

THE GOLDEN CHAIR AWARD – BEST SHORT DOCUMENTARY:

Set against the backdrop of a dramatic Irish landscape, this insightful film cleverly explores the dynamic between a teenager and his strict grandfather working on a family sheep farm.  As the boy grows and learns before our eyes, we witness the intersection of tradition and modernity, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The Golden Chair goes to Ramboy, co-directed by Matthias Joulaud and Lucien Roux.

THE GOLDEN CHAIR AWARD – BEST MUSIC VIDEO:

The jury was unanimous in choosing this year’s music video. It challenges the format, highlights the music, and leaves us wanting more while sparking thought processes that continue long after the screening ends. The idea of the video is clear, original and well executed. We just want more! Now I finally understand what acting actually is!

The Golden Chair Award for best music video goes to Impro på Økern, Directed by Erik Treimann.
