Master Class: Myanmar Diaries - Collective Filmmaking

Saturday     10:00     Vesle Hallvard

This will be a masterclass about how to work with a collective in filmmaking.

It will take as a case study MYANMAR DIARIES – the 2022 Berlinale-award winning hybrid documentary feature about life in the aftermath of the military coup in Myanmar. Myanmar Diaries is a film made by a collective of ten anonymous young Burmese filmmakers: with a background in fiction, documentary, journalism and animation.

The masterclass will explore a few topics:

  • creating a bigger whole based on short films (documentary/fiction/animation)
  • how to work successfully as a group/collective
  • editing a collective story
  • working anonymously as a group, which we also like to call ‘egoless filmmaking’

And from the producer’s perspective, dealing with a highly critical film and with great risks for the filmmakers in the making process:

  • how to ensure the safety and anonymity of filmmakers
  • collaborating cross-borders with closed societies
  • how to mentor and guide a creative process with filmmakers at risk

Above all, we will dive into an edit workshop to show you how the film transformed from its initial idea as an omnibus collection of short films to one collective whole that seamlessly moves back and forth between fiction and documentary.

The masterclass will be hosted by Corinne van Egeraat, the producer of Myanmar Diaries.
