Competition Programme 2024

We are so pleased to be able to announce the full competition programme for the 47th Norwegian Short Film Festival! The festival takes place on June 12 – 16 in Grimstad, on the southern coast of Norway.

ESSENTIAL MEETING POINT

The Norwegian Short Film Festival is one of the most important meeting points for the national film industry and representatives from abroad. We are Norway’s sole Oscar® qualifying film festival, and are proud to have ongoing, long-term programme partnerships with Sundance, Berlinale, Toronto International Film Festival, and other esteemed collaborators from the international film industry.

For the second year in a row we’ve had a record number of film submissions – a grand total of no less than 3412 films have been submitted! Read more about this year’s film submissions here. From this vast pool of films, 156 titles have been selected for the competition programme across four categories: Norwegians Shorts (NKD), International Shorts (IKD), Short Documentaries (KD), and Norwegian Music Video (MV).

Short Docs are screened alongside Norwegian and International Shorts respectively, but comprise a separate competition with its own award — The Golden Chair for Best Short Documentary. Scroll down to read more about all the festival awards that will be handed out in Grimstad in June.

STATEMENTS FROM THE PRE-SELECTION COMMITTEES

The committee for Norwegian Short Films and Norwegian Short Documentary (NKD) say that the entries they’ve seen have been characterized by an impressive level of quality both in terms of production and content — which is very promising for this year’s festival programme.

The stories that are told are varied, but as always there is a lot of human relational drama. About love, feelings and relationships, partners, marriages, siblings, and animals. Friendships in all forms and sizes. And also about broken hearts and dreams, about young people trying to find their place in life.

At the same time there is a lot of humor in the films. […] In many films the humor is absurd, liberating, and smart […] There were also quite a few genre films, and to our great delight they were not lacking in blood, madness, nor mystery.

The members of the pre-selection committee for Norwegian Music Video can report a higher number of entries than ever before in the category, and state that they have been both entertained and engaged by all the music videos they have seen.

The entries made us consider and discuss what a music video really is and what it should be […] The genre is constantly explored and challenged, while still keeping the music video’s classic form and content intact. This year’s entries gave us the full range in music genres, film language, and budget. […]  We are pleased to see that the genre is constantly evolving, and we want to thank everyone involved in creating these works.

The pre-selection committee for International Short Films and Short Documentaries (IKD) have had no less than 2939 films to watch and discuss!

We have experienced 2,939 stories in all genres, formats and expressions. 791 hours (if viewed non-stop; 13 days) of love, joy and laughter, humor and seriousness, frustration, anger and sadness – the whole range of human emotions in an equally large pool of combinations. The result is a balanced and exciting program, a selection we are proud to present.

To the 2 865 filmmakers who unfortunately did not make it through the final cut: The competition was fierce in a sea of great films, and we want to thank each and everyone for the experiences you have let us take part in.

To the filmmakers and teams behind this year’s selection — 47 short films and 27 short documentaries — our thank yous are as big as our congratulations:

We cannot wait to get your stories up on the big screen in Grimstad, where we know they will find a great home and an enthusiastic audience!
