The mayan kaqchikel artist Edgar Calel performs a ritual in the São Paulo Biennale building seeking to make an offering to his ancestors. Among dreams and memories, his spiritual path leads him to embody his power animal.
Edgar Calel (b. 1987) is from San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. His artistic work is a continuous search for the translation of the Maya-Kaqchikel worldview into other contemporary languages. His paintings, videos, installations and performances have been exhibited in spaces such as the 11th Berlin Biennial of Contemporary Art, Tate Museum and Museo Reina Sofía.
Born in Brazil, Fernando Pereira dos Santos is a documentarist and producer. His first film was Mapuche – Gente da Terra (2012). Currently producing the documentaries Babylon and Samuel and the Light. XAR – Sueño de Obsidiana is commissioned by the Berlin Biennale.
