Running the Oscar® Race

Oscar®, that little big gold statue, is one of our industry’s highest marks of excellence.

Kortfilmfestivalen is Norway’s only Oscar®-qualifying festival, and in three categories: Norwegian Short Film, International Short Film, and Documentary Short Subject.

Winning the main award in either of these three qualifying sections will also be the beginning of a process that for many is very foreign territory, and let’s be honest –  the journey towards an Oscar® nomination can be overwhelming.

Kortfilmfestivalen is pleased to welcome industry experts for a two-part exclusive session aimed to demystify the process and illuminate the road to Oscar®.

Important! No recording allowed, film or audio.

PART 1

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Senior Vice President of Member Relations, Global Outreach and Awards Administration Tom Oyer will discuss the Oscar® qualifying and submission process for shorts films. Moderated by Kathleen McInnis, the talk will focus on the basics: how short films qualify, the timeline and key aspects of the submission process, and how the Academy® selects the films to move forward at each stage of the voting process. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience of filmmakers. No recording is allowed during this session.

PART 2

Veterans from the Awards Circuit, Michael Fukushima (producer of four Oscar®-nominated short films) and Kathleen McInnis (Oscar® campaign publicist for shorts and international feature films) will pull back the curtain and demystify the process and mechanics of mounting an awards campaign for short films. Frank and practical information will be shared, from timelines to budgets and beyond. No questions will be off limits, which means no recording will be allowed! If you want to know, you’ve got to show…up to the panel!
